Manchester City 0 – Liverpool FC 0
Any hopes that yesterday’s game at Eastlands would decide the front-runner in the race for fourth place were quashed with a disappointing show by both teams although when you take into consideration that no side has beaten City at home this season, a point was maybe not such a bad result.
Victories for both Villa and Spurs means that only one point now separates these four teams with Liverpool in sixth position.
The game started slowly and fans had to wait until a minute before the break to see the best opening by Liverpool when Skrtel sent a free header wide from inside the six yard box fed by Gerrard’s corner.
With Liverpool beginning to notch up the yellow cards Rafa started to call in the big guns and Benayoun came on to replace Rodriguez at 63 minutes closely followed by Torres for Babel.
Only after this did Liverpool seem to show any chance of breaking down the City backline.
Gerrard struck straight into the arms of Given from some 20 yards and Skrtel made up for his earlier miss with a goal saving challenge on Adebayor.
Javier Mascherano proved to be the Red’s best player on the day whilst Ryan Babel was well below par even after being shuffled into attack after the departure of Rodriguez.
Had it not been for a fine save by Pepe Reina and an even better tackle by Skrtel Emmanual Adebayor could have been celebrating with a couple of goals but in the end neither side really deserved to win.
Torres bought the booking tally to six in injury time and although this will incur an automatic fine at least it proved that Liverpool were trying!
