Wolves thoughts and Spurs Monday
Wolves thoughts and Spurs Monday
It's pouring with freezing rain outside but I guess we're lucky because further east it's falling as snow and thank goodness the Spurs game is on Monday. Pity poor Everton at Wigan - but then again, nah!
The follow-up performance at Wolves last Tuesday was every bit as professional as the one against Bolton the week before had not been. Most of us were cagey as to whether, having raised the game from the two cup-ties, the team would be able to maintain the same level at Molyneux. In the event, what could have been a really tricky match, was taken on board with a ruthlessness and professionalism which we'd hope for, but wouldn't have bet our last Rolo on!
I always hesitate to make too much comment from watching a television replay, but two things struck me; The first was the excellence of the one touch passing and the other was how Spearing added bite against opponents noted for their physical approach.
One thing's for sure, the efficiency of the Molyneux win now leaves the manager with a most enviable problem of selection for Monday against Spurs, especially with both Suarez and the skipper available. Spurs meanwhile are said to have doubts about Lennon, Defoe, Van der Vaart and Adebayor as well as Huddlestone and Gallas. The first three in particular have muscle problems so there is speculation Louis Saha may lead the line. Not a player to take lightly, mind, especially as he invariably plays well against us.
But with Kenny spoilt for choice it's really all about getting the right formation for an opponent which likes to pass the ball about, though interestingly, they didn't venture much out of their shell at Man City until they were two goals down. Furthermore Tottenham's record at Anfield is piss poor and even when they beat us last season it was courtesy of a deflected fluke and a gift penalty from AIG Webb. Just to enhance the statistic Old 'Arry has only two victories on his CV from 28 visits!
Not for a single moment am I going to indulge in predictions on selections though I would expect Glen Johnson to be asked to a job on Gareth Bale, something he's done successfully playing for England when the Welshman hardly got a kick.
